There is much talking about turbochargers today. Turbochargers are installed on both petrol and diesel cars. They come in different shapes, sizes and modifications. The only common thing about them is that they are meant to bring more air to the engine and thus, boost the car and improve its performance. Basically, a turbocharger is a device that intakes air and compresses it into the engine. The only question remaining is the maintenance of turbochargers. What can we do to extend the life of the turbocharger?
There are some ways to prolong the life of your turbo. The easiest way is to let your vehicle warm up before you drive and cool down before you leave the car. It is important to warm up the car in order to warm the oil. When it is cold, it is thick and heavy and it cannot lubricate the turbocharger properly. And if it is not lubricated and you start moving fast, it will damage both the turbo and the engine consequently. You should also cool the engine down because if the engine stops working abruptly, the oil circulation will stop harshly which is not good for the turbo that is still very hot. As the oil does not circulate any more, the oil which was in your turbo when you turned off the car will just stay there boiling and baking. This wears out the turbo which can cause further repair expenses. For some people it is quite annoying to sit in the car and wait for it to cool down. Luckily, there is turbo timer for such people. You can leave the car and it will shut down itself once the desired temperature is reached.
You can also extend the life span of your turbo by purchasing a blow off valve. Some cars already come with it, however, it is highly advisable to buy and aftermarket one if you plan to increase the power of your car. This valve prevents turbo surge which happens when the car is boosting and the throttle is already closed. Turbo spins at about 100,000-200,000 RPM?s. At this speed it cannot stop and start whenever the throttle closes or opens. If there is no venting valve, the air produced by turbo will stop against the closed throttle, turn around and come back to the turbo which is a very damaging process contributing to the fast wear-out of your turbo. To avoid this you need to install a recirculation valve which can vent the unused boost so no further damage happens.
And the most important thing that keeps your turbo going is change of oil. Change it regularly and opt for premium oils. Well lubricated and cool turbochargers work smoothly and effectively and last long.
