When I book a hotel I always make a reservation on a online hotel bookings service, such as Hotel World. With a hotel booking from any hotel in the city, whereas, travel agents like to only recommend hotels they know about and where they receive commissions.
I start by order the properties from cheapest to dearest. This gives me a good starting point and an idea for the hotel rates in that particular city for my travel dates. I usually filter out the bottom end of the market hotels and often filter out the top end of the market as well. Why would I not want to stay in a five star hotel?
Well it’s not because I don’t like luxury hotel suites with all the modern facilities. It’s not because I don’t want to stay in a luxury hotel in the upmarket part of town. It’s simply this. I don’t think they are good value for money and I don’t want facilities I won’t use or over the top. Now I have stayed in many luxury hotels when a company has been paying the bill but I just wouldn’t pay that much money for what you get. When I travel on holiday I usually stay in a three or four star hotel as I believe they are comparable and I don’t care about the extra and unnecessary service that is on offer at the five star accommodations.
When I stay in a hotel I want a simple, fast check in process and to get to my room so I can settle in fast. I don’t want hotel employees trying to over service the guest by showing you the room and all the hotel’s facilities. Once I arrived at the Sydney Airport Hilton Hotel at 11pm at night. I had just flown in and I wanted to check in quickly and go to bed as I had an early flight the next morning. I wanted to take my bag to the suite myself but being a five star hotel they don’t allow that. There are hotel employees to do these sorts of things. Another employee insisted that he take me to the room as I wasn’t allowed to simply find the room myself. What an inconvenience. I couldn’t get rid of this hotel employee who kept trying to show me the facilities of the room and even tried to unpack my baggage for me.
Eventually he just stood there waiting for his tip. He had wasted his time as I don’t give tips!
When checking into a 3 or 4 star hotel you never encounter these issues. If you need assistance with your luggage you can ask. But I prefer to carry my own baggage and find the room myself – I am capable of finding a room.
